If you can do certain things each time the disposal is used, then a clogged disposal will only not happen nearly as often as it has in the past. The following are the things that you must remember to do every single time the garbage disposal is utilized in your home.
1. Always turn the faucet on before you put anything in the disposal – You always need to turn on the faucet before adding food to it and let it run for a couple of seconds after turning the disposal off.

The water is going to help the ground up food particles pass easily through the pipes so your disposal does not become clogged with them. Without the water being run, you can count on a clogged disposal and you can count on it to happen often.
2. Dispose of the food slowly – It is never a good idea to shove a lot of food into any garbage disposal because large amounts of food are one of the easiest ways to clog a disposal. Instead, you need to put the food down it slowly and give the disposal a few seconds in between to do its job right.
Running water for a few seconds after you turn off the disposal will help any leftover food particles get swept out of the pipes by the water, which will leave the pipes free and clear of any obstructions that can cause a big clog.
3. Throw certain things in the trash and don’t use the disposal – There are certain things that should never go down a garbage disposal and this includes egg shells, potato peels, peels from carrots, oil, fat and a few other things.
All of these things should be disposed of in the trash or through another avenue, but never down the disposal because all of these are big culprits for causing clogged disposals.
